This R9 has the most incredible perfectly bookmatched maple top I have seen, even the Custom Shop decided to not drill that fantastic AAAA top for a pickguard but rather leave it wide open to the hungry eyes! The top is made to look like it's made from one single piece of maple. The guitar is loud and resonant with a very fat, meaty core tone. The mids and low-mids definitely dominate the overall characteristic of this fine specimen both unplugged and plugged-in. The back is deep transculent black, so the Honduras mahogany wood grain is visible in bright lightning. Very elegant color combination indeed. The fretboard is of course Madagascar RW - in fact all of the Historic Reissue models until 2008 had Madagascar boards. This one is dark with a black wavy pattern going all through the board.
